Behind the scenes

Get your suitcase ready… It’s time for A Traveller’s Dye-ry!

The last 7 weeks have been more like a hurricane than a whirlwind, and with less than a week remaining until the opening of A Traveller’s Dye-ry, it is definitely time for a progress update!

From Monday 4th to Saturday 9th October, 10am to 5pm, we shall open the doors at Hy, Stonehaven and invite you to join us on a visual journey of photography and yarn. Along the way you will stop at seven ‘Destination Stations’, each representing a different country and unique collaboration between photographer and dyer. On the gallery walls you will find photographic images whose colour, mood and sense of place inspired the unique hand-dyed colour-way displayed beneath.

And now for a little more insight as to what to expect. In the gallery below we have used ‘alternative images’ to those in the exhibition but through these images we reveal the seven destination countries and each collaborating dyer.

Of course, the fun does not stop there! Each country and each dyer will also be represented in knit and crochet samples. We have shawls, socks, a cowl and garments to feed your imagination and to get those hooks and needles clicking.

Fiona Meade, Aurelie Colas, Beatrice Alexandra-Howden, Eilidh Robertson and myself have all designed items for the event. We also have knit and crochet samples from designers such as Stephen West, Asa Tricosa and Andrea Mowry to tempt you.

A huge thank you must go to our sample knitters Dorothy, Helen, Eveann, Lorna, Sandie and Moira. Without their hard work, our display would be sadly lacking!

Of course, as well as framed and unframed images, yarn, calendars, notions and needles you will also find A Traveller’s Dye-ry book, a definite ‘must have’ for your Christmas wish list. Stocks are limited so guarantee your copy by pre-ordering via the link here.

We realise that many of our friends will be unable to attend, too many miles, too many restrictions, etc. So, we have set up a little something for you too!

  • A Traveller’s Dye-ry Deluxe Box, and
  • A Traveller’s Dye-ry Destination Box

For now, due to the Official Dye-ry Secrets Act, we are unable to show pictures of the yarn and images inside, but read on, and all will be revealed!

On Wednesday 6th October we shall be hosting our regular Zoom Knit Group, live from the exhibition. We shall take you on a virtual tour around the gallery, answer any questions and reveal the contents of the Dye-ry boxes. To take part, all you need to do is follow the information provided on our Virtual Knit Group page, which you will find here.

So, that’s it for now folks, its 11.30am and I have a heel to turn before lunchtime. We hope to see you all very soon either in real life or via Zoom!

Take care and keep crafting,

Janice x
